EC to PPM Conversion Chart: 500 Scale vs 700 Scale

A Hydroponic PPM Calculator converts raw electrical conductivity (EC) into parts per million (PPM) to track total dissolved solids (TDS). Dissolved mineral salts conduct electricity in water; meters measure this conductance in millisiemens per centimeter (mS/cm) and multiply it to display PPM.

Because different manufacturers use different reference standards, your PPM reading depends directly on your meter scale:

1. 500 Scale (TDS / USA / Eutech / Bluelab 500)

Multiplies EC by 500 based on a Sodium Chloride (NaCl) standard. 1.0 mS/cm EC = 500 PPM. Standard across North America.

2. 700 Scale (Hanna / Truncheon / European 700)

How to Convert EC to PPM for Hydroponics

PPM (500 Scale) = EC (mS/cm) × 500
PPM (700 Scale) = EC (mS/cm) × 700
EC (mS/cm) = PPM_500 / 500 = PPM_700 / 700

Example: An EC of 1.6 mS/cm yields 800 PPM on a 500-scale pen, but registers as 1120 PPM on a 700-scale probe. The nutrient strength and salt density in the reservoir are identical.

How Much Nutrient Solution Do I Need Per Gallon of Water?

During peak growth or warm spells, plants transpire water faster than they consume minerals, driving up root zone salinity. Use the reservoir dilution ratio formula to calculate the exact volume of fresh water needed to drop high PPM back to target levels:

V_topoff = V_current × (C_current - C_target) / (C_target - C_fresh)

Where V_current is the starting reservoir volume, C_current is current EC/PPM, C_target is desired nutrient strength, and C_fresh is top-off water purity (0 PPM for RO water, or 50–150 PPM for tap water).

Is EC or PPM more accurate for hydroponics?

EC is more accurate because digital probes directly measure electrical conductivity in millisiemens per centimeter (mS/cm). PPM values are merely estimated calculations based on arbitrary manufacturer conversion factors (0.50 or 0.70).

What PPM is too high for hydroponic plants?
